Haven Lake Animal Hospital is excited to offer acupuncture, a form of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine has been practiced for thousands of years and seeks to restore balance and harmony within the body. Veterinary acupuncture is based off these ancient principles but modified to meet the needs of the four legged patient. This Eastern approach to healing evaluates and treats the whole animal, not just a specific disease. After completing specialized training at the Chi Institute in Florida, Dr. Natalie Titus and Dr. Kathy Francis are prepared to assess and address the needs of your pet with a fusion of Eastern and Western medicine.

How Does Acupuncture Work? Does It Hurt?

The goal of acupuncture is to assist the body in healing itself by bringing about certain physiological changes such as nerve stimulation, increased circulation, and muscle relaxation. To achieve this healing change, very fine needles are placed at specific points in the patient’s body to promote a desired physiological response. Some animals will feel a little discomfort when the needles are placed, but most patients tolerate them well and even relax enough to sleep during a session. Adding electrotherapy or vitamin injections at the acupuncture sites can prolong the positive effects of the treatment and allow a longer time between sessions.

How Do I Begin Acupuncture Therapy For My Pet?

Acupuncture first begins with a thorough exam and evaluation of all aspects of the patient’s habits, environment, and medical concerns. Once the imbalances and issues to be addressed have been identified, the needling portion of an acupuncture session will begin. Frequency of the acupuncture therapy can vary depending on the patient and the goals of treatment. Many patients will benefit from multiple sessions in the first week or two and then work towards longer time periods between return visits as goals are achieved and symptoms resolve.
